Twelve-month closure confirmed at Limerick swimming pool for upgrade works

BREAKING: Limerick Leisure centre Nick Rabbitts

ASKEATON Pool and Leisure Centre will close its swimming pool for a year for vital upgrade works.

The pool will cease operating from close of business on Thursday, March 16 to allow the planning and start of health and safety plant room works. It's anticipated these will take 12 months, at which time the facility will open once again.

An energy audit of the Leisure Centre has been carried out with the support of Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland.

Its objective is to improve the energy efficiency of the centre as part of the plant room works.

The gym itself will continue to operate up to end of August.

Askeaton Leisure Centre’s plant room has been impacted on numerous occasions by flooding from the tidal River Deel when particular adverse weather conditions are experienced.

Government grant aid has been approved of €646,659 from the Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media from the Large Scale Infrastructure Fund to contribute towards the cost of the emergency works for the swimming pool plant room at Askeaton Pool and Leisure.

The project is to be managed by Limerick City and County Council.

Opened in 2007, the current investment is considered vital to protect the future of the facility from flood risk.

The leisure centre is owned by a company: Askeaton Pool and Leisure DAC, which is 51% owned the local authority, with the balance controlled by Askeaton Swimming Club.
