LIMERICK City and County Council have announced that they will continue improvement works on the Limerick Greenway with a number of renovations starting as early as next week.

A two-and-a-half kilometre section of the Greenway will be closed between Barnagh and Templeglantine from this Monday, January 9 to Monday, February 13 to facilitate the construction of two cattle underpasses.

These will consist of concrete tunnels beneath the Greenway surface to allow secure animal crossing and to ensure the safety of pedestrians and cyclists.

On its completion, the new underpasses will improve the overall visitor experience of the Greenway.

The council has expressed their apologies to the public for the inconvenience caused by these closures as it will not be possible to cycle the full length of the Greenway for that time.

However, they have added that it will be possible to cycle 22km from Rathkeale to Barnagh and then further 9km from Abbeyfeale to Templeglantine.

The 40km Greenway follows the old Limerick to Kerry railway line, and links the West Limerick landscape with towns and villages located in some of Munster's most historic sites.

At its time of construction during the summer of 2021, the route was earmarked to be transformative for the region, with €10 million invested making it the biggest outdoor tourism amenity project ever undertaken in Limerick by Limerick City and County Council.
