Limerick Fire Service carry out inspection at UHL over "safety concerns"

LIMERICK CITY and County Council have confirmed that they are waiting for a report from Limerick Fire Service after safety concerns were raised at University Hospital Limerick. 

An inspection was carried out at the hospital on Tuesday after UHL declared a "Major Internal Incident" following an unprecedented amount of patients on trolleys at the hospital. 

Limerick City and County Council are responsible for the operation of the local fire service and a spokesman said they are awaiting a report from the inspection. 

"Limerick City and County Council can confirm that that a Fire Officer carried out an inspection at the Emergency Department of the University Hospital Limerick on Tuesday January 3, 2023, and that we are awaiting their final report". 

According to the fire authority, the "safe number" of trolleys that can be in the Emergency Department is 29. 

On Wednesday, there were 76 patients on trolleys at University Hospital Limerick, with 41 of these in the Emergency Department.
