A COUNTY Limerick business has landed at the top of the ‘Q’ having just been named the best supermarket in Ireland for hygiene and food safety.

The National Q Mark Awards, known as the “Oscars” of business excellence, saw Ryan’s SuperValu in Kilmallock, go head to head with more than 100 of the best companies in Ireland, before being named victorious as the winner of The National Q Mark Award for hygiene and food safety. This is the ultimate achievement in quality and excellence for an Irish supermarket.

“We are delighted to have won the Q mark award for hygiene and food safety, I believe that it is due to the hard work and diligence of our team,” said Liam Ryan, owner of the store which is located on Sarsfield Street in the town.

The Kilmallock supermarket is owned by Ryan’s supermarket group which operates five supermarkets in Munster; SuperValu in Tougher, Glanmire, Grange, Kilmallock and a Centra in Aherla. As a group they have a strong record for quality and excellence having won the Group Retailer of The Year Title at the National Q Mark Awards in 2008. This winning formula continues with the Kilmallock store being one of two from the group that were nominated for the Q mark awards this year, with the Centra in Aherla also winning an award on the night.

Phil Hogan TD Minister for the Environment, Community and Local Government congratulated Ryan’s SuperValu in Kilmallock and said that their “focus on quality and excellence and their commitment to their customers was a real winning combination”. He went on to say that he was delighted to launch the new Green Q Mark to the business market-place and saw it as a very positive initiative on behalf of EIQA (Excellence Ireland Quality Association - The Guardians of The Q Mark). EIQA’s national quality and excellence awards are one of the most eagerly awaited events in the corporate calendar.

The awards are attended by more than 800 people each year and more than 25 award categories are celebrated on the evening of the gala ceremony

The managing director of the National Q Mark, Irene Collins, offered her congratulations to Liam and his team at SuperValu in Kilmallock. “They have a well developed hygiene and food safety system in place and winning this Q mark is tremendous recognition of their commitment,” she said.
