CASTLETROY restaurant owners Lorraine Fanneran and Bruno Coppola awoke to a special prize on New Year’s Day.

The owners of the increasingly popular Italian restaurant La Cucina - a favourite of the Munster rugby squad - received the restaurant of the year award from the Bridgestone Guide, along with Galway restaurant Kai.

John McKenna of the prestigious food guide wrote: “Lorraine and Bruno Coppola’s La Cucina in Castletroy in Limerick just keeps on getting better and better. The five McKennas ate five different bowls of pasta here one lunchtime, and every one was perfect, every one was distinct, every one was as good as it could be. That’s great modern cooking.”

Ms Fanneran, an avid social media networker on Twitter and Facebook, has seen the restaurant’s name and profile shoot to prominence across the country. More than 5,000 are fans of the restaurant on Facebook alone. In March last they also won an award for best casual dining, while Mr Coppola’s parents have run La Piccola in the city for over 30 years.
