Inspiring Limerick women share diabetes journey

THREE inspiring women from Limerick; national rowing champion and coach Aoife Willis, international diabetes advocate Jean Langford, and Ashling O’Kelly, diagnosed in her 40s after an initial misdiagnosis, will share their stories at a special event for people with type 1 diabetes.

Thriveabetes, Ireland’s volunteer-led community for people with type 1 diabetes, will host a half-day Mini Thriveabetes event titled Mind Matters with Type 1 Diabetes in the Old Ground Hotel, Ennis on September 27. This coincides with the tenth anniversary of their very first conference and will focus on the psychological well-being and of people living with type 1 diabetes.

Keynote speaker Dr Mark Davies, Consultant Clinical Psychologist at Belfast City Hospital, will share practical strategies for managing stress, preventing burnout, and staying motivated while living with type 1 diabetes. Following his talk, Limerick will be strongly represented by Aoife Willis, Jean Langford, and Ashling O’Kelly. Ashling has spoken out about the urgent need for a national diabetes register and her disappointment with the unequal standard of care across Ireland.

Together, the panellists will share personal stories and practical strategies for maintaining both physical and emotional well-being. There will also be an exhibition area to showcase CGM and insulin pump technologies.
