A NEW state-of-the-art cancer care centre is on its way to Limerick after two health providers linked up.
Bon Secours Health System and UPMC plan to deliver the facility on land on the edge of Moyross, in Ballygrennan, on land where plans for a massive new commercial and residential development have been green lit.
It’s anticipated the cancer centre will bring extra capacity to radiation, oncology and medical oncology services in the Mid-West region.
The facility is being hailed as a major investment in regional healthcare infrastructure and a milestone in improving access to world-class cancer services for patients in Limerick and across the region.

UPMC and Bon Secours have already come together on a similar facility in Cork.
It has become a centre of excellence which caters for more than 4,000 patients.
In the past five years, approximately 50,000 radiotherapy fractions have taken place there.
This new initiative in Limerick marks the expansion of that partnership.
It comes with demand for cancer services continuing to grow in Limerick.
This is placing pressure on existing facilities and increasing the burden on patients and families.
It’s anticipated this new cancer centre will expand local capacity in radiation and medical oncology, providing advanced treatment options and comprehensive support services closer to home.
“This partnership reflects our shared commitment to delivering life-changing medicine and improving access to world-class cancer care across Ireland,” said Eamonn Fitzgerald, managing director of UPMC Ireland.
“This investment will bring improved capacity to an already hardworking regional network, helping to reduce waiting times and improve outcomes for patients in the Mid-West. Together with Bon Secours Health System, we are proud to enhance cancer care in the region and deliver leading-edge treatment with compassion and excellence.”
Bill Maher, the group chief executive of Bon Secours Health System, added: “The development of this cancer centre aligns with our 2025 Strategic Plan to expand access to expert, high-quality care across Ireland. Together with UPMC, we are taking a major step forward in providing cutting-edge cancer care, offering not just treatments but hope and support to patients and families across Limerick and the Mid-West.”
Construction of the cancer centre is set to begin in the coming months, with services expected to commence in late 2026.
The centre will operate in line with international best practices and national cancer control standards, ensuring that patients in the Mid-West have access to the same level of care as those in larger urban centres.
