THE preparations for the 2013 inter-county hurling commence this Monday night, October 22, when Limerick play Clare in a challenge game in the new all-weather pitch in the University of Limerick.

The game will have a 6.00 start.

While no panel was available in advance, it is understood that John Allen will use the game to run the rule over some new players, mingled with a selection of his 2012 panel.

Of course players from Kilmallock won’t be available due to their Munster club quarter-final against Thurles Sarsfields in Fitzgerald Park on Sunday October 28.

The inter-county challenge game will afford both managements the final chance to see new players in an inter-county game ahead of the closed season months of November and December.

Limerick and Clare have already met on five occasions in the calendar year of 2012.

The official opening of the new all-weather pitch will be done by Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport, Leo Varadkar.

The official launch at the North Campus Pitches and Pavilion in University of Limerick will he followed by five matches on the fully-floodlit synthetic grass park. All games start at 6.00.

As well as the hurling game, the UL Ladies Rugby team play the Munster ladies rugby side, the North Munster rugby academy play the East Munster rugby academy, the UL Mens soccer team play a Limerick FC selection and the UL Ladies Soccer team play a FAI Ladies selection.
