NEWCASTLE WEST booked their place in the Limerick SFC at the weekend when they knocked champions Monaleen out of contention thanks to a 0-10 to 0-8 win.
In a repeat of last year’s county final, Newcastle West avenged that defeat when they made the most of wind advantage to take a 0-7 to 0-1 lead in at the break. Thomas Quilligan was on target with frees while James Kelly, Ian Corbett and Michael Quilligan also found the range. Monaleen’s only score in the first half came from Pat Keating.
Monaleen, inspired by Ger Collins, fought back brilliantly in the second half to draw level but they couldn’t keep up the momentum and late scores from Shay Lyons and Thomas Quilligan got them over the line.
