THE Limerick minor footballers were no match for Cork in the opening round of the Munster MFC in the Gaelic Grounds on Saturday night when they were hammered 3-13 to 0-6.
Although Limerick had the first attack, Cork drew first blood through two Seán O’Sullivan points in as many minutes and skipper Brian O’Driscoll settled them into the groove before Sean Barrett got Limerick off the mark.
It was no more than a solitary gesture as the Rebels, winning almost every kickout, saw Cathal Vaughan move them further ahead and floored the opposition after just ten minutes when Killian O’Connor drew the defence and laid off to Conor Horgan to slide underneath the advancing James O’Meara. It was the first of Horgan’s three goals but from then on it was just a matter of how much Cork were going to win by.
They were well in control in that opening half and were 2-8 to 0-1 up at the break.
Half-time changes took some of the sting from the Cork attack and gave Limerick more space to attack from deep. After O’Driscoll widened the margin, long-range points from Bourke and Darragh O’Donovan signalled a Limerick rally to which Bourke added a free. However, it was all undone when Andrew Moynihan was fouled with the goal at his mercy and Horgan converted for his hat-trick.
Limerick have a second chance and await the winners of Kerry and Waterford in the Munster quarter-final.
