Six clubs celebrate Limerick County Football Championship success

MUNGRET St Paul's created history by winning their first ever Limerick Senior Football Championship title when they defeated pre-match favourites Newcastle West 0-12 to 1-5 in Mick Neville Park on Sunday afternoon. The city club's rise has been remarkable in the last three years since winning the county intermediate title in 2023.

Mungret St Paul's manager Kevin O'Hagan was delighted to see his side get over the line.

“It's surreal, it hasn't been a long road for this team, funnily enough it's been a long road for the club. I think it's 24 years since we have been in a county senior final. I was talking to a few of those lads during the week, they thought they would be back and they weren't. It feels unbelievable again it just feels surreal,” said O'Hagan.

Limerick senior footballer Killian Ryan, who impressed for Mungret St Paul's in their famous win, is hoping that the city club can now push on.

“This is the start for this club is what we hope, we want to get better and better. We want this club to take over if possible every other team in the county are going to go and drag us down. It's our job to keep pushing hard,” added Ryan.

Meanwhile, Askeaton Ballysteen Kilcornan Desmonds had too much for St Senan's winning 2-15 to 2-7 in the Limerick Intermediate Football Championship final. ABK Desmonds will play senior football in 2026.

Ahane achieved back-to-back promotions when the East Limerick side edged past Fr Casey's 0-10 to 0-9 in the County Premier Junior ‘A’ decider. which will now see them play intermediate football next year. Former Clare footballer Gary Brennan was in charge of Ahane, while ex-Ireland rugby international Sean Cronin anchored the defence impressively.

Mungret St Paul's, ABK Desmonds and Ahane will all represent Limerick in upcoming Munster club championships.Camogue Rovers won their first county title at adult level when the South Limerick outfit got past Adare after extra time in the County Junior ‘A’ football final.

Knockainey needed extra time to get past Knockane in the Junior B Football Championship final. South Liberties had too much for Athea in the Junior ‘C’ Football decider. Meanwhile, Doon were crowned Junior ‘C’ Hurling champions after they defeated Monagea at the weekend.

Meanwhile, Limerick senior hurlers will begin their Co-Op Superstores Munster Senior Hurling League campaign against Clare on Saturday January 3 in Clare before hosting Cork on Wednesday, January 7 at 7pm at a Limerick venue.  Limerick are set to take on great rivals Tipperary in a special challenge game in support of the Dillon Quirke Foundation, the inaugural Champions Under Lights event, at Fethard Town Park on Saturday, December 13 at 6pm.

The Limerick senior footballers will begin their McGrath Cup at home on Friday, January 2 against Tipperary at 7pm. Jimmy Lee's charges will then travel to Cork on Sunday, January 11 at 2pm.
