The SMI, Newcastle West squad who defeated Ballyhaunis Community School in their All-Ireland semi-final
SCOIL Mhuire agus Ide Newcastle West's remarkable journey to the All-Ireland Post Primary Schools Junior ‘C’ Ladies football final continued in dramatic fashion as they overcame a fierce Ballyhaunis Community School challenge in a thrilling semi-final at Banagher, Co Offaly on Friday last.
SMI got off to the perfect start, racing into a 1-2 to 0-0 lead with first year star Emma Horgan netting an early goal, while captain Isabelle O’Brien was also on target for the Limerick side.
However, Ballyhaunis hit back to be level, 1-2 each, at half-time. SMI goalkeeper Maeve Cussen made two top class saves into the second half as the Mayo side moved two points in front. A second Horgan goal helped SMI regain the initiative.
A terrific Ciara Lanigan goal for the West Limerick side proved key in their victory.
Substitute Eva Power also scored a crucial second half point in the exciting win.
