Limerick football clubs prepare for the provincial championship

TWO Limerick clubs are in action today in the Munster club football championships this weekend.

Last weekend all three club hurling champions - Doon, Newcastle West and Feenagh-Kilmeedy fell at the first hurlde in the provincial championship.

Last Sunday, Adare won the Limerick senior football championship for the first time since 2020.

The west Limerick outfit defeated Fr Casey's 1-10 to 0-8 on last Sunday in the Mick Neville Park.Hugh Bourke impressed in Adare's victory scoring 1-6. The experienced Mikey Lyons made an impact straight away from the bench chipping in with 0-2.

Manager Harry Gleeson has now guided Adare to four Limerick senior football championship titles. The men in red and black were defeated in the last three county finals by Newcastle West.

Adare will be delighted to put that disappointment behind them and this weekend they look to win a game in the Munster SFC for the first time.

The Limerick champions take on Eire Og, Ennis in the Munster senior football championship quarter-final today at 1:15pm in Cusack Park, Ennis. Eire Og have won three county titles in the last four years. The Ennis based club reached the Munster semi-final in 2022.

Adare previously won senior football championship in 2017, 2018 and 2020.The Limerick champions were beaten in 2017 and 2018 in the Munster SFC and in 2020 there was no provincial championship played due to Covid 19.

Nemo Rangers and The Nire both defeated Adare in the Munster SFC in 2017 and 2018.This will be the first meeting of a Limerick and Clare club in the Munster SFC since 2009.

Limerick footballers Jeffrey Alfred, Shane Costelloe, Shane Doherty, Paul Maher and Joe Sweeney have all impressed for their club this year.

Rathkeale were crowned intermediate football county champions when they got the better of Galbally in Ballyagran.Mikey Meade's side have now been promoted to the senior ranks for the 2025 season.Paul White and Barry Coleman stood out for Rathkeale.

The Limerick intermediate county champions will make the trip to Kilshannig in the Munster IFC quarter-final on Sunday at 1:15pm. This game will be live streamed on Clubber.
