Cian Hedderman (Ballybrown), Jack Butler (Ahane), Sam Hickey (Adare), Ewan Dillon (Effin), Darragh Langan (Monaleen), Dave Clohessy (Fedamore), Mark Keane (South Liberties) after UL's win
THE UNIVERSITY of Limerick are Freshers 1 hurling league champions following a 1-20 to 1-13 win over DCU in the final on Tuesday evening.
The Limerick college, managed by Fedamore's Dave Clohessy, were full value for their win with Monaleen's Darragh Langan playing a starring role.
Jack Leahy was the scorer in chief for UL with 14 points, while David O'Reilly chipped in with 1-2. UL made a stunning start to the game with Leahy landing two early frees, while O'Reilly slotted one from play.
Then came the UL goal and again it was the same duo involved. Leahy's long range free was diverted towards goal by O'Reilly to see his side 1-3 to 0-0 ahead after 10 minutes.
UL were the better side throughout the game and in the first half. They led by 1-9 to 0-7 at the break. That margin would have been closer if it wasn't for a Langan block that denied a DCU goal just before half time.
Leahy and Anthony Keady got the second half scoring underway but a goal for DCU brought them back to the contest and the within three points.
However, some stunning placed balls from Leahy propelled UL to victory by a comfortable seven-point margin at the full time whistle.
