Sadness at passing of highly popular former Limerick hurler Dermot Kelly

THE death has occurred of accomplished former Limerick hurler and well-known musician Dermot Kelly, of Castletroy and Lahinch, Co Clare.

A renowned inter-county hurler with Limerick, the late Dermot Kelly was a driving force behind ‘Mackey’s Greyhounds’, the famed Limerick hurling team of the 1950’s.

His greatest feat was scoring 1 goal and 12 points in a 60-minute Munster hurling final against Clare who were firm favourites after beating both Tipperary and Cork earlier in the provincial championship.

During his decorated hurling career, Dermot also played for Limerick Minor hurling team in 1949-1950. 

He won three County Championship medals with Claughaun GAA club as well as two County Championship Football medals. The late Dermot Kelly also played in the Railway Cup for Munster 1955-1959 and was Captain of the Munster Railway Cup side in 1956.

Popular sportsman Dermot was also a keen golfer - he captained both Ennis and Lahinch Golf Clubs.

He was also renowned for his songwriting, performing and recording talents, penning ‘The Ballad of Joseph McHugh‘, ‘The Cliffs of Moher’ and many more much-loved songs and stories.

Dermot's last performance was televised on TG4 over the Christmas period singing 'Dromcollogher' on the Percy French programme. 

He was also a noted member of the College Players Limerick in the 1950’s and was an active member of Conradh na Gaeilge Limerick.

Dermot worked with Bank of Ireland and was affectionately known as The Singing Bank Manager. He was also one of the organisers of the Bank of Ireland GAA All-Stars.

Husband of the late Breda, Dermot Kelly is sadly missed by his loving children Séan, Eithne, Maura, Colm, Aileen and Gráinne, sons-in-law Paul and Thierry, daughters-in-law Michele & Kierra, his adored grandchildren, brothers Jim and Colm, extended family and a wide circle of friends.

Reposing wil take place at Griffin’s Funeral Home, John’s Gate on this Sunday, February 26, from 3:30pm to 5:30pm. Funeral will arrive at St. John’s Cathedral on Monday, February 27 for Requiem Mass at 11am, streamed live at https://www.limerickcathedral.com/live-stream/  

Burial will take place afterwards in Kilmurry Cemetery, Castletroy.
