LIMERICK has risen by three spots in the twice-yearly Anti-Litter League, with inspectors praising improvements in the city centre.

The city centre is 33rd out of 40 towns, cities and areas surveyed across Ireland, up from 36th last July.

The inspectors from An Taisce, and appointed by Irish Business Against Litter (Ibal) surveyed 25 sites across Limerick, finding more than half of them received an A grade in terms of cleanliness.

“Many of the approach roads were very much deserving of the top litter grade,” the report relased this Monday states.

“City centre shopping streets which deserve a special mention were O’Connell Street, Ellen Street and Henry Street - these were particularly freshly presented and very good with regards to litter.”

They also reserved special praise for a number of sites which had been identified in previous reports as being littered, which had now cleaned up their act.

However, the inspectors noted eight sites in the city centre were ‘heavily littered’.

They said some laneways are “neglected” and “harbouring heavy levels of litter”.

Elsewhere, a second site the inspectors surveyed in Limerick, at Galvone on the southside, received praise.

It was ranked 25th in the table, and described as being ‘clean to European norms’.

“This is most likely the first time there were no heavily littered upon/dumped upon sites in Galvone, an area which has been branded ‘seriously littered’ in the past,” stated the report, adding: “There is clear evidence of enormous strides being made”.

Sligo Town came top of the Anti-Litter League, and was described as being ‘Cleaner than European Norms’.

At the other end of the table, Dublin’s north inner city is 40th out of 40, and is ranked as being ‘littered’.
