Community Climate Action Programme tackles local climate commitment in Limerick

The Community Climate Action Programme is designed to support local communities to take meaningful climate action through funding programmes. Applications for funding are currently being accepted

LIMERICK CITY and County Council (LCCC) has announced the continued rollout of the Community Climate Action Programme, a transformative initiative designed to support local communities to take meaningful climate action.

In partnership with the Department of Environment, Climate and Communications, this programme aims to build low-carbon, sustainable communities across Limerick.

With a funding allocation of €811,000 under Strand 1 of the programme, 'Building Low Carbon Communities', it enables not-for-profit community groups to implement projects that directly address climate challenges.

These projects span over key themes such as community energy, travel, food and waste, shopping and recycling as well as local climate and environmental action.

The application phase opened on Tuesday, October 21, and will remain open until 5pm on Tuesday, December 16, with applications being made through the limerick.ie mypoint application portal.

Eligible groups, such as those registered with the Public Participation Network (PPN), Tidy Towns, or other community collectives, can receive 100% funding for projects that reduce greenhouse gas emissions, improve energy efficiency, enhance biodiversity, and increase climate resilience.

Projects are expected to be completed within an 18-month timeframe, with quarterly reimbursements based on milestone achievements.

Aidan Finn, Head of Environment and Climate Action at Limerick City and County Council, said “The Community Climate Action Programme is not just about short-term projects, it’s about laying the foundation for long-term climate resilience. Every funded initiative contributes to a healthier, more sustainable future for Limerick.

“Through the support and leadership provided by our community groups we are showing that Climate Action is local and relevant to all,” said Aidan.

This initiative is part of a broader national effort to meet Ireland’s climate targets, including a 51% reduction in carbon emissions by 2030 and achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.

By empowering communities to take the lead, the Community Climate Action Programme ensures that climate solutions are locally driven, impactful, and inclusive.

Any groups thinking of applying should contact Darren Barry, Community Climate Action Officer on communityclimatefund@ limerick.ie .
