'What a surprise' - People react to confirmation of General Election dates

Taoiseach Simon Harris has finally announced his intention to call the General Election this Friday, 8 November.

The Taoiseach told RTE's Six One that he will call for the dissolution of the Dáil on Friday with the hopes of polling day taking place on Friday, 29 November. 

Speculation has been rife regarding the dates of the General Election in recent weeks, however Harris said that the Finance Bill had to be passed before he could request the dissolution of the Dáil by President Michael D. Higgins.

With the Finance Bill being passed on Tuesday, it came as no surprise that the Taoiseach confirmed his intentions to call the General Election this week.

Indeed, many have taken to social media to share their thoughts on the long awaited announcement.

One person wrote on X, formerly Twitter: "TDs have been canvassing since Summer!"

Another said: "I thought it was called by the amount of leaflets coming in the post, my bad."

Evidently, people were unsurprised by the announcement, with another person commenting: "What a surprise. Was/is there anyone who didn't know the date."

Of course, it has been a big day for election news across the pond as well as Donald Trump was confirmed as the 47th President of the US. 

With the confirmation of the General Election dates also revealed by the Taoiseach on Wednesday, some took to social media to say: "The news from the US makes it difficult to be enthusiastic."

Others, however, echoed the the Trump campaign's slogan by saying: "Make Ireland Great Again!"
