Medical students come up with tool to help doctors complete heart and blood vessel procedures

A GROUP of biomedical students from University of Limerick (UL) have impressed management at Edwards Lifesciences with a new device.

Together, Kes Cheevers, Hannah Brind, Amy Ward, Leona Sheehy, Ele Madigan were NaviCor Medical.

They came up with a tool, Echotrack, to help doctors do heart and blood vessel procedures.

It’s a smarter, easier-to-see tool that helps doctors do heart and blood vessel procedures more safely, with less radiation.

They triumphed at the fourth annual UL Medical Device Innovation Showcase held in the college’s Bernal Institute.

The event provides an opportunity for three teams of biomedical engineering students from the university’s Masters programme to pitch medical device concepts to a distinguished panel of industry and academic leaders.

The event also included keynote addresses from event sponsor Edwards Lifesciences and Engineers Ireland and was attended by an audience comprising of 225 UL biomedical students, faculty members and the head of the school of engineering David Newport.

Emmet Kelly, vice-president and general manager, at Edwards Lifesciences Ireland, said: “Building on the foundation of our collaboration with the University of Limerick through a Memorandum of Understanding last year, our partnership with the showcase further reinforces our commitment to fostering innovation, developing talent and making a lasting impact, both locally and globally. We value the opportunity to support an event that further deepens our relationship with the University of Limerick.”
