CREATING a better world is a recognised achievement of one Limerick city school, who have received a  special  gold  passport for their work in global citizenship education.

Villiers School on North Circular Road in Limerick city is one of eleven schools who received the award from worldwide global schools.

The award recognises a fostering of global awareness, cultural appreciation and sustainable development practices among both students and staff.

The Limerick school achieved the award through teaching and learning opportunities, as well as participating in fundraising and awareness campaigns for organisations including Focus Ireland, the Irish Cancer Society, UNHCR the Refugee Agency,  and Irish Network Against Racism.

School events included Irish Traveller Ethnicity Day, International Women’s Day, Human Rights Day and International Day Against Islamophobia.

Through these awareness days, the students promoted positive mental health, equality, intercultural learning and anti-racism sentiments and values.

Villers, head of school, Jill Storey, said this is a progression on a previous award they got.

“What it means is understanding, respecting and valuing different cultures. This award inspires us to continue to provide our students with transformative educational experiences that prepare them to thrive as global citizens.”
