Limerick sows seeds of change with biodiversity workshop

A Seed Saving workshop is being held this August by LCCC as part of their five-year Biodiversity Action Plan

LIMERICK’S wild spaces are getting a boost, one seed at a time.

As part of its ambitious five- year Biodiversity Action Plan, Limerick City and County Council (LCCC) is hosting a free, hands-on Seed Saving Workshop during National Heritage Week.

National Heritage Week runs from August 16 to 24 and celebrates Ireland’s rich natural, cultural, and built heritage through free events and activities across the country.

The plan, which aims to reverse the decline in biodiversity by 2030, outlines 66 targeted actions based on ecological research and public input.

These actions were developed with contributions from the Limerick Biodiversity Forum, nature conservation groups, NGOs, members of the public, Council departments, and Strategic Policy Committee members.

One of those actions comes to life on Friday, August 23, from 11am to 1pm, at the Corbally Wildflower Meadow, where biodiversity expert Áine Ní Fhlatharta will guide attendees through the art of seed saving.

From identifying native plants to learning how to harvest and store their seeds, the workshop is a unique opportunity to take an active role in protecting local nature.

Supported by the National Parks and Wildlife Service, this event connects people directly with the biodiversity of their own community, offering practical skills, fresh air, and a deeper appreciation of the wildflowers that help keep Limerick’s ecosystems healthy.

The Biodiversity Action Plan envisions a Limerick where biodiversity thrives across all sectors, with local people and stakeholders working together to restore, protect, and enhance nature, not just for its beauty, but for its essential role in creating sustainable, vibrant communities.

Workshops like this help bring that vision to life, offering everyday people the chance to become stewards of their environment — one seed at a time.

The plan aims to raise awareness of what each individual can do.
