LIMERICK City and County Council has been shortlisted in the category of Public Space and Planning at the 2024 KPMG Property Industry Excellence Awards.

This recognition is for the innovative and sustainable Go Green Routes Horizon 2020 project on the Castletroy Greenway in Limerick.

The KPMG Property Industry Excellence Awards, in association with the Irish Independent, celebrate outstanding achievements in the property sector across Ireland.

Limerick City and County Council chose the Castletroy Greenway as a brown site blank canvas to deliver a sustainable, inclusive, co-created design for both the community and nature.

With a strong focus on natural play, the area has been remodelled to create what is said to be a space of interest for young and old.

Existing trees on-site suffering from ash dieback have been recycled into play equipment, art features, insect hotels and ground cover.

The landscape has been reshaped to create mounds covered in wildflowers and swales at low points and along paths.

The project provided the opportunity to create linkages between fragmented (sub)urban greenspaces and implement nature-based solutions that focus on contributing to green infrastructure in keeping with the principles of European Green Infrastructure Strategy.

Carmel Lynch, a senior executive engineer, environment and climate action at the Council, said: “We are thrilled to be recognised for our efforts in transforming public spaces.

“The Go Green Routes Horizon 2020 project on Castletroy Greenway is a shining example of how we can create green, sustainable, and enjoyable environments for everyone.

“This shortlisting in the KPMG Property Industry Excellence Awards highlights the hard work and vision of our team.”

The winners of the 2024 KPMG Property Industry Excellence Awards will be announced at a gala event in the Convention Centre, Dublin on Thursday, November 28.
