“The scene has been preserved for forensic examination by the Garda Technical Bureau. The Coroner and the Office of the State Pathologist have been notified and a post-mortem

Mr Bailey, who is the father of a number of children, is well known to gardai and has served time in prison.

The investigation is being coordinated from an incident room at the Bridewell Garda Station under the direction of a senior investigating officer.

Cllr Pádraigh Reale, in a statement, expressed his condolences to the Bailey family.

“I cannot imagine the heartache they are experiencing,” said the Labour councillor in Limerick City North.

“I knew Jamie from a very young age and although he had moved away from Limerick anytime you met him, he would always stop to ask how things were back home.

“I would appeal to anyone with information about this horrific incident to get in contact with Gardaí,” said Cllr Reale.

No funeral arrangements have been announced at this time.
