It was gardaí’s belief that this man has “no regard” for the order and would continue to commit further offences if granted bail

A MAN has appeared at Limerick District Court after breaching a safety order, obtained by his mother, the same day he was released from prison.

The man’s solicitor made an application for bail on behalf of his client, which was objected to by gardaí.

Judge Patricia Harney heard that on a date in July of this year, the man, who cannot be named for legal reasons, returned to a property following his release from prison.

Limerick District Court was informed that his mother was residing in this home and contacted gardaí. It was heard that upon arrival, he called his mother a “b****” and locked himself into a bedroom. She obtained the order against her son months prior to this incident.

There had also been a breach of the safety order previously on a date in June, which he served time in custody for. It was gardaí’s belief that this man has “no regard” for the order and would continue to commit further offences if granted bail. They also expressed concerns for the woman involved.

The man’s solicitor said he was disputing the allegations, putting to the court that there was no lock on this bedroom door and that his client had been paying rent to stay in the property. It was said that he fled the scene as he was afraid of going to prison again.

The solicitor also disclosed that this man, who hails from a county in the Munster region, struggles with his mental health and has spent time in a psychiatric facility.

It was heard that while he does have a legal right to stay at the home, he is liaising with the Homeless Action Team.

Judge Patricia Harney granted the man bail on the condition that he remain in custody until a new address can be clarified and then verified by gardaí. Upon release, he must also pay an own bond of €100, reside at an appropriate address, sign on at a local garda station three times a week and abide by a curfew, as well as conditions of the safety order.

He will return to Limerick District Court via video-link for a hearing on this, and other pending matters, early next week.
