FraudSMART reported that almost €9.4 million was laundered through money mule accounts in the 12 months to June 2025

PROMISES of easy money are being used to recruit young people as money mules, Limerick gardai have warned.

Sergeant Michelle O’Halloran, Crime Prevention Office, Henry Street Garda Station commented:

“A money mule is someone who allows their bank account to be used to receive and transfer money which has originated from criminal activity. Young people are increasingly being approached through social media, messaging platforms and fake employment opportunities, with promises of easy money.

“Never allow another person to use your bank account or ask you to transfer money on their behalf. If you’re being offered money simply for receiving or moving funds, that should immediately raise concerns. FraudSMART reported that almost €9.4 million was laundered through money mule accounts in the 12 months to June 2025.

“The key message is don’t allow the pressure of securing accommodation to compromise your judgement. Take time to verify the property, the landlord and the payment arrangements. If something appears too good to be true, or you’re being pressured to act immediately, step back and make the necessary checks before proceeding.
