GARDAI in Kilmallock are investigating a burglary after a homeowner returned from holidays and discovered a break-in at their property.

According to authorities, the owner made the journey back to their house, where it was realised shortly later that their rear door had been “forced open.”

A number of items, including jewellery, were stolen during this burglary and an investigation is now underway.

Following this, Sergeant Michelle O’Halloran, Crime Prevention Officer at Henry Street Garda Station in Limerick city, issued advice to those who may need to leave their homes vacant for a period of time.

Sergeant O’Halloran said: “Ensure all doors and windows are securely locked, particularly rear doors and less visible access points.

“Use timer switches or smart lighting to give the impression that someone is home and ask a trusted neighbour to keep an eye on the property, collect post and report anything suspicious.”

She also urged the public to “avoid advertising” holiday plans on social media until returning home, considering you may never know who is watching online.

“Ensure your alarm is working, keep valuables secured and consider CCTV and security lighting.

“A few simple precautions can help reduce the risk of burglary,” the Crime Prevention Officer concluded.
