GARDAI are appealing to people who are travelling to visit family and friends this Christmas to be vigilant and to take measures to protect their luggage and property.
The advise is being issued following a theft incident on board a train between Dublin Heuston and Colbert Station.
"A man in his forties from Ukraine was travelling by train to Limerick. He placed his luggage in the storage area and took his seat. The train was very busy and it made several stops along the way. On arrival at Colbert station he realised his suitcase was missing," said divisional crime prevention officer Sergeant Ber Leetch.
"This suitcase contained valuable documents belonging to him that are required for immigration purposes. It is safer to keep anything of value close to you and to store your luggage in the overhead area as near as possible to your seat," she added.
If the luggage cannot fit in the overhead storage area, the garda advice is to check it at every stop and watch that nobody removes it.
Gardai at Roxboro Road garda station are investigating the incident.
