Young man stole student’s bike locked at Limerick university

Robert Hickey was directed by the judge to pay compensation for the bike theft

A YOUNG man who stole a bike from the grounds of the University of Limerick was brought before Limerick District Court.

Robert Hickey, 23, with a home address at Star Court, John Carew Park, Limerick, took a locked bike from the university on October 10, 2025.

Prosecuting Sergeant Denis Waters told the court that the bike was the property of an international student, and was worth €2,000.

Mr Hickey was charged with section 112 of the Road Traffic Act, which states that “a person shall not use or take possession of a pedal cycle without the consent of the owner thereof or other lawful authority”.

The court heard that Mr Hickey is on social welfare, and that he is willing to pay compensation for the theft. The man has no previous convictions.

Judge Patricia Harney said given Mr Hickey’s previous good record, she would adjourn the case to July to allow him to pay compensation for the bike theft.
