A unique case came before Limerick District Court
A CORK man was before Limerick District Court for a decade old theft from a business that no longer exists.
Alan Garland, 39, of Farranferris Avenue, Cork stole €60 worth of fuel from the Topaz filling station on the Dock Road on April 16, 2016 the court heard.
Upon hearing the somewhat historic nature of the man’s crime, Judge Patricia Harney told Mr Garland’s solicitor, Darach McCarthy, “you’re in a league of your own, Mr McCarthy”.
In mitigation, the solicitor said “he’s sorry, judge” and that Mr Garland has the compensation in court - with a €40 top-up to account for 10 years’ inflation.
The judge commented that the repayment would be “a headache for gardaí” - as the Topaz filling station has been replaced by Circle K.

Prosecuting sergeant Denis Waters outlined that Mr Garland has 39 previous convictions - including drug offences, two thefts, a public order offence and road traffic offence.
The judge gave “credit” to the man for coming to court and applied the Probation Act.
