The face of 'evil': Tegan McGhee

THE SISTER of Limerick child killer Tegan McGhee said she hopes she "rots in hell" and is “an evil monster".

"No amount of words can describe how cold and cruel she is," wrote Shannon McGhee in a Facebook post.

Tegan McGhee, aged 32, of no fixed abode, was sentenced to life in prison on Wednesday for the murder of Mason O’Connell-Conway at a house she was renting with the boy's father in Rathbane, Limerick city on March 16, 2021.

Mason’s dad, John Paul O'Connell, was previously sentenced to seven years in prison having pleaded guilty to endangerment, neglect and impeding Tegan McGhee's apprehension or prosecution, knowing or believing she had murdered his son.

Mason, aged 4, was found with serious injuries at a house in Limerick city on March 13, 2021. He was pronounced dead three days later.

It emerged during the court case that Mason had been subjected to physical abuse for weeks and spent four days grounded in his room before his stepmother shook him and struck his head off the floor. He had also suffered a blunt force injury to his abdomen that lacerated his liver. A pathologist found that either injury to the head or the liver would have caused death on their own.

When Tegan McGhee was being led away by prison officers in the Central Criminal Court, it has been reported her sister Shannon shouted, “I hope you rot in hell”.

Shannon later posted on her Facebook page, above a photo of Mason in a Manchester jersey, that she wasn’t going to say anything about this but she refuses to live in someone else’s shame.

“My sister Tegan is an evil monster. No amount of words can describe how cold and cruel she is. She fooled us all for a full year before she was arrested and the truth came out.”

Shann said she couldn’t understand how the person she knew and loved her whole life was someone she didn’t even know.

“I’ve never said anything about this before because they weren’t allowed to be named. Not me or any member of my family knew of the horrific things that happened to Mason. He was kept from his family as well as us. We believed he had fallen from a bunk bed as did everyone else.

"When Mason died, we also lost him - he was a beautiful little boy who brought so much joy to our lives and we mourn him everyday.”

Shannon said justice has finally been served.

“Although no amount of time can ever compare to the life she stole from Mason. To sit in court and watch her not even show a flicker of emotion speaks volumes - she is evil.

“I admire the strength Lizzie (Mason’s mother)  has shown and how hard she fought for her son. The nightmare is never really over but at least the long wait for justice is finally over,” concluded Shannon in the post.

Dozens of people have commented underneath the post in support of Shannon.

One wrote: “Shannon ye don’t need to be ashamed of their actions. It was out of everyone’s control - no one made them do what they did. Your family most certainly have suffered as well because of their pure evilness.”
