It occurred shortly before 6pm on Saturday evening. There are no reports of any injuries.
Following a query from the Limerick Leader, a garda spokesperson said: “I can confirm gardaí were alerted to an incident of criminal damage of a vehicle outside a premises on Ennis Road, Limerick city on the evening of Saturday, December 3, 2025.”
The garda spokesperson went on to say that the fire brigade put out the blaze and investigations are ongoing.
Limerick Fire and Rescue Service received the call-out at 5.59pm with two appliances rushing to the scene. Firefighters were back at base in Mulgrave Street at 6.51pm after extinguishing the fire.
A video of the car ablaze has been widely circulated on social media. There are unconfirmed reports that the incident is linked to an ongoing feud between rival groupings on the southside of the city.
It is not known if the car is owned by the family of an expectant or new mum, or if somebody was visiting a woman in the maternity hospital.
The HSE and HSE Mid West were both contacted for comment but neither had responded at the time of going to press this Tuesday.
A few hours later Limerick Fire and Rescue Service were tasked to put out a car fire in Garryowen after 5am on Sunday morning. It doesn’t appear to have been reported to gardai as a spokesperson said, “We have no reports that tally with this currently listed”.
However, it is understood that it was set alight on purpose.
It is not known if this was retaliation for the arson attack at the maternity hospital.
Separately, the previous Thursday, December 11, a garda spokesperson said they received a report of an incident of criminal damage by fire that occurred at a domestic residence in Castleconnell at approximately 9.15pm.
“No injuries have been reported at this time. Investigations are ongoing,” said the garda spokesperson. Anybody with any information on the incidents is asked to contact local gardai.
