Intoxicated man attempts to ‘escape’ from gardaí while ‘driving erratically’ in Limerick

LIMERICK gardaÍ observed a motorist driving a grey van erratically in Coolanoran, Rathkeale, while on patrol on Thursday evening.

Gardaí reported that a chase ensued when the driver failed to stop for gardaí, drove through stop signs and refused to yield to traffic. 

Gardaí managed the track down the vehicle, but upon approach the driver “tried to escape”. Despite the escape attempt, the driver in question was arrested. 

Gardaí stated that the man was “found to be under the influence of an intoxicant”.

The man has since been charged and court proceedings are to follow.

Limerick gardaí stated that the number of road deaths have increased this year in comparison to last year, in a Facebook post describing the incident.  

 

A total of 171 fatalities have occurred on Irish roads in 2025, making six more additional deaths in comparison to 2024’s records. 

Limerick gardaí warned: “Driving dangerously and under the influence puts other road users at serious risk.

“Everyone deserves to get home to their family safe - do not endanger yourself or others on the road unnecessarily.”
