A MAN pleaded guilty at Limerick Circuit Criminal Court to an assault in Newcastle West while being 10,000 miles away Down Under.
Prosecuting barrister Lily Buckley, instructed by State solicitor Brendan Gill, said the accused is appearing via video-link from Australia where he has lived for a number of years.

Tony O’Doherty, aged 35, of Churchtown, Newcastle West appeared on the screens in Limerick Circuit Criminal Court from a location in Australia for arraignment before Judge Colin Daly.
Mr O’Doherty said “guilty” when the court registrar put the charge of assault causing harm to a named individual contrary to Section 3 of the Non-Fatal Offences Against the Person Act, 1997.
The incident occurred at Church Street, Newcastle West, 12 years ago on February 2013
A date of December 15 was set down for a sentencing hearing.
The court heard that Mr O’Doherty will be appearing in person in court on that date.
