Limerick man charged with possession of slash hook is remanded in custody

A KIMALLOCK man arrested by gardai on Tuesday evening was brought before Limerick District Court this Wednesday afternoon.

Martin O’Reilly, aged 30, of Portauns, Kilmallock, County Limerick is charged with possession of an offensive weapon, namely a slash hook. It is contrary to Section 9 of the Firearms and Offensive Weapons Act, 1990.

Sergeant Aisling O'Neill, prosecuting on behalf of the State, handed details of arrest, charge and caution to Judge Aine Clancy, presiding. It is alleged that the offence took place in Deebert Park, Kilmallock on Monday, May 12.

Sgt O'Neill said directions from the Director of Public Prosecutions are awaited.

“The State is opposed to bail (for Mr O’Reilly),” said Sgt O'Neill.

Sarah Ryan, solicitor for Mr O’Reilly, said the State’s case, as she understands it, is “based to a huge extent on CCTV footage".

“I am seeking a disclosure order for the CCTV footage and for Mr O’Reilly to be remanded in custody until tomorrow for a bail application,” said Ms Ryan.

Sgt O'Neill said Garda Robert Young, who was present in court, will endeavour to get the CCTV footage to Ms Ryan this afternoon.

Judge Clancy remanded Mr O’Reilly in custody until Thursday for a bail application in Limerick District Court.
