A SUBSTANTIAL amount of money stolen from a young woman’s bank account in Limerick is being investigated by gardaí.

Scammers posing as bank representatives are reportedly calling people in Limerick to obtain personal banking information, according to gardaí, as an investigation is launched.

“A female in her 20s reported that she received a phone call from a male presenting as a representative from her financial institution,” said Sergeant Michelle O’Halloran, crime prevention officer at Henry St garda station.

“The caller stated that there was a suspicious transaction on her account and after some time she disclosed all her banking details to this caller, believing him to be genuine.

“Subsequently her account was accessed and a substantial sum of money was removed from her account.”

An investigation is underway by gardaí at Castleconnell garda station.

Gardaí are reminding people that financial entities will never make unsolicited contact with individuals asking for personal details, account numbers, 4-digit pin number or passwords.

“Anyone receiving unsolicited communications looking for these personal details should not reply to the text messages, emails or other communications and never ever share banking details over the phone,” Sgt O’Halloran said.

“If you do encounter this, contact your bank independently to check on the validity of the communications received before taking any action or providing any information.”
