GARDAI investigating an alleged assault which occurred in broad daylight on a busy street in Limerick city centre have made two arrests.

The alleged assault of a man in his 20s occurred at Parnell Street, close to Colbert Station, at approximately 4.15pm this Tuesday.

According to a garda spokesperson, "a male in his 40s and female in her 30s have been arrested and are currently detained under the provisions of Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984 at a garda station in Limerick."

Following the incident, the injured party was taken to University Hospital Limerick to be treated for his injuries which are not life-threatening.

A WhatsApp video of the incident is in circulation and it shows a male and female aggressively assaulting a young man.  The footage also shows what appears to be the older male biting off a part of the young man's ear lobe.

Gardaí declined to comment on the injuries which were sustained by the young man.

Investigations into the assault are ongoing and any witness are asked to come forward.
