LIMERICK people have been urged to dust off their hiking boots and take part in a charity climb of Croagh Patrick, which will take place at the end of next month.
Adare men Liam Woulfe and Mike Aherne are trying to muster as many climbers as possible to take part in the event on September 30, which will raise money for two charities: cystic fibrosis charity ‘TLC4CF’, and Irish Autism Action. The climb was officially launched at the Woodlands House Hotel in Adare on Monday night, and the organisers are hopeful that over the next five weeks a combination of word of mouth and charitable spirit will see the number of climbers sky rocket.
“By climbing we are all only just giving one of our free days to help these causes, and in doing so hopefully we can make a difference for the families that have to cope with the implications of these conditions every day”, Liam said.
So far, a total of 299 have signed up to take part in the climb. Each climber is given a sponsorship card and asked to come up with at least €100, with the proceeds being split between both charities.
Monday night’s launch was attended by representatives of both charities, with an added dash of celebrity being provided in the shape of Limerick hurlers Declan Hannon, Tom Condon and Wayne McNamara, as well as retired Limerick great Pat Hartigan. Liam told all those in attendance that while the plan to climb the County Mayo mountain was only mooted two weeks ago, the response he and Mike had received so far was “overwhelming”. Their new target for climber numbers is now 400.
Anyone interested in taking part in the charity climb has been asked to contact either of the organisers to obtain a sponsorship card. Alternatively, if you want to contribute to the cause but are unable to take part in the climb itself, donations can also be made via Liam Woulfe.
