ONE of the city’s most well-known shops has won a top retail prize.

McGovern’s Fashion, now based in Bedford Row was named Retail Store of the Year, for units between 1,000 and 2,500 square feet at the Retail Excellence Ireland awards in Galway at the weekend.

Established in 1962, the menswear clothing retailer was in William Street, before closing down in January 2011 due to the retirement of Dermot McGovern.

But his son John D McGovern, the third generation to take over the family business, came forward and opened a brand new store in Bedford Row.

To add to this, the brand was relaunched. Speaking to the Limerick Leader, a delighted John said: “It is great recognition for the hard work of our staff.”

Asked what he felt made his store stand out, John believes it was the design of the retail space.

“The store is designed in a unique way with antique features. It favoured us well.

“The staff are also very committed to ensuring the customers get the best possible treatment. This was one of the main requirements,” he said.

Since opening 12 months ago, John, who employs four full time staff, says business has remained steady.

“We have had a great reaction from customers. We are seeing steady growth and are happy enough with it,” he explained.

Retail Excellence Ireland also put together a list of its 50 best stores. McGovern’s came in at number four, while there were placings for Garrett’s Butchers in Castletroy (21st place), and BBs coffee and muffins in the Crescent Shopping Centre (30th).
