Limerick City and Surrounds Aerial
UISCE ÉIREANN has announced the start of significant upgrade works in Limerick City aimed at strengthening the local water network and reducing long-standing leakage issues.
The project will see over 1.1 kilometres of ageing cast-iron water mains replaced across O’Donoghue Avenue, Clansfort Terrace, Glenmore Avenue and Mulgrave Street.
The works form part of Uisce Éireann’s National Leakage Reduction Programme, which targets older estates where water connections, often iron or lead, were traditionally installed at the rear of properties.

These backyard service lines, frequently shared across neighbouring homes, are prone to deterioration and can cause substantial leakage, low pressure, and difficulty in locating and repairing faults.
Commenting on the project, Programme Manager for Uisce Éireann’s National Leakage Reduction, Brian McCarthy, said: “We’re investing in the future of Limerick City with essential network upgrades that will strengthen and sustain our water infrastructure for generations. These improvements will safeguard homes and businesses, ensuring a reliable supply of clean water for years to come.
“Ageing water mains contribute to a significant amount of leakage and by replacing them with more modern pipes, we’re reducing bursts, eliminating leaks, improving water quality, and futureproofing drinking water. We appreciate the patience and support of the local community as we work together to build a stronger, more resilient network," said Brian.
Areas of work will be limited to short sections to minimise impact on customers. Traffic management will be in place for the duration of these works in the form of traffic lights and flagmen on O’Donoghue Avenue, Clansfort Terrace and Mulgrave Street.
A road closure will be in place on Glenmore Avenue from 05 January – 30 January. Local and emergency access will always be maintained. Traffic flows will be diverted during the duration of the closure.
Works will commence on O’Donoghue Avenue, moving to Glenmore Avenue in the new year and completing on Mulgrave Street.
Short-term water supply interruptions may be required, with residents receiving at least 48 hours’ notice in advance.
Ward and Burke Construction Ltd will carry out the works on behalf of Uisce Éireann, with project completion expected in April 2026.
