Bishop of Limerick concelebrates Mass with Pope Leo

Bishop of Limerick, Brendan Leahy with Pope Leo in Rome

BISHOP of Limerick, Brendan Leahy concelebrated a Mass with Pope Leo in Rome during which the Pope declared St John Henry Newman a Doctor of the Church.

This is a title given by the Catholic Church to saints recognised as having made a significant contribution to theology or doctrine through their research, study, or writing. Limerick has a strong connection with St John Henry Newman as he visited the city a number of times in the 1850s.

Commenting on Pope Leo’s declaration of St John Henry Newman, Bishop Leahy said: “John Henry Newman was a great teacher. We in Limerick can feel a special link with him because he spent some time in Limerick, writing and preaching.”

“His works and example are an inspiration to teachers. We think of his famous expression ‘heart speaks to heart’.”

Bishop Leahy along with 30 teachers went on a pilgrimage to Rome over the Halloween break, organised by the Limerick Diocese.

A highlight was an audience for educators with Pope Leo, who spoke of education in terms of developing four qualities: interiority, unity, love and joy. Pope Leo thanked teachers for their great work and noted how teachers personify the Church by dedicating themselves to the education of young people.
