THE GOVERNMENT has announced funding for the upgrade of facilities of a popular playground in Limerick, with the allocation of just under €16,000.

Askeaton playground is set to get a refurbishment boost as they have been awarded €15,998 for new “inclusive equipment and sensory play panels”.

This is part of the Capital Grant Scheme for Play and Recreation and the latest funding allocation of €500k for playground equipment across the country was announced by Minister for Children, Disability and Equality, Norma Foley.

She said: “I am delighted to announce this capital funding that will directly benefit families and children in every corner of Ireland. These grants will enable city and county councils to create and upgrade playgrounds, making them more accessible, inclusive and enjoyable for everyone.

“I want to take this opportunity to extend my thanks to the local authorities for their applications and I look forward to seeing the benefits these projects will provide to local communities for many years to come.”

The scheme offers maximum funding of up to €20,000 per project, an investment that will see positive impacts delivered to children and families across the country.

It was obligatory for councils to consult with local children and young people to receive any grant funding for playgrounds and play areas under the scheme. Councils also had to provide matching funding of at least 25% of the cost of the project.

The Play and Recreation Capital Funding Scheme was introduced in 2013 to support new and existing play and recreation facilities for children and young people.

The 2025 scheme aims to support: The refurbishment of existing play and recreation facilities, the incorporation of natural play elements and the development of new play and recreation facilities.
