Laurel Hill Secondary School this week welcomes back two former pupils to speak about career opportunities in the EU.

Laura Droog and Sarah Rooney will revisit their secondary school as part of the EU’s Back to School programme.

Ms Droog from Castleconnell, but now based in Luxembourg, is excited to return.

“I am going back to my old secondary school. It’s been a while, I graduated in 2005. It’s always nice to go back and see the teachers and how things have changed.

“I’m based in Luxembourg, I’ve been there since March 1, 2011, almost two years now. I’m an Irish language proof reader in the publications office. We translate any laws into Irish before they’re published,” said Ms Droog.

Asked whether she would recommend a career in the EU she said:

“Absolutely. I’ve had some wonderful experiences. Not only are there jobs available at EU level but also traineeships. I did a traineeship in Brussels for five months before I came here (Luxembourg). The work experience is fantastic.

“You have to have two of the EU official languages. With Irish being an official language you can have Irish as your main language and your second language would have to be English, French or German.

“Languages are very important and that’s one of the things I’ll be emphasising when I go to the school.”
