GARDAI in Newcastle West are continuing to seek a second man in connection with the shooting in a local estate last Wednesday.
Local man, Gerry Hennessy, 34 and his sister Colette were both injured in the incident which took place outside the family home in Castleview Estate about 3.30 in the afternoon. A 25-year-old man was arrested in connection with the incident early last Thursday morning and was detained and questioned under Section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act, 1939.
But the man was subsequently released and is facing a charge of breaching an exclusion order from the estate. He is due to appear in Newcastle West court next month. No charges in connection with the shooting incident have been laid against him but the investigation is continuing.
Meanwhile, the search is continuing for the second man involved in the shooting. And Gardai are still anxious to locate the silver-coloured car used in the incident.
House-to-house enquiries were conducted in the aftermath of last Wednesday’s shooting. But the Gardai are keen to hear from any members of the public who may have noticed suspicious activity in or around the Castleview Estate in the hours up to and after 3.30pm last Wednesday. Anybody with information should contact the Gardai in Newcastle West at 069-20650 or the Garda confidential line at 1800 666 111 or any garda station.
Meanwhile also, both Gerry and Colette Hennessy have been released from hospital. Mr Hennessy was shot in the side when the lone gunman opened fire on him as he was taking shopping out of a car. He was airlifted to Cork University Hospital while his sister, who was nearby, received a hand injury
