GARDAI in Newcastle West are investigating two incidents in which shots were fired at homes in West Limerick in the early hours of last Friday morning.
The incidents occurred at Collins Park, Abbeyfeale and in Ballyhahill village. Nobody as yet has been arrested or charged in connection with the incidents but Gardai have conducted door-to-door enquiries in both locations.
Shots were fired outside the house in Collins Park about 1am last Thursday night/Friday morning and at 2am, shots were also fired at a house in Ballyhahill. Some damage was done to a door and window in the Ballyhahill house but nobody was injured.
Gardai attended both scenes and conducted some investigations, which are continuing.
Meanwhile, Independent councillor for Adare Rathkeale, Cllr Emmett O’Brien said he was “alarmed” at the incidents. “Thankfully nobody was injured,” he said but he reiterated his call for the appointment of a Garda Sergeant to Askeaton Garda Station, which has been without an assigned sergeant for some time.
“We also need increased patrol hours and increased Garda visibility and presence in the communities. This will not only give comfort to the locals but will also give solid support to local Gardai who are working so hard to prevent crime”.
“While I accept the local Gardai are doing their very best with limited resources, not having a permanent and highly visible police presence is having profound social consequences for the people of Askeaton, Foynes and Ballyhalill and surrounds.”
“This shooting incident only increases the growing sense of fear and isolation that rural people feel in this constituency and we need quick and decisive action from the government to give the Gardai more resources.”
