FOR THE SECOND time in a year a parish beauty spot has been turned into an illegal dump.
Last April, Anneke Vrieling made contact with the Leader about dumping at Gooig bog.
She was on an Irish Wildlife Trust trip to carry out a newt survey, but instead found mattresses, nappies, clothes, sofas and more rubbish.
Now John Sheehan has got in touch after his son went fishing at the World’s End, and had more luck reeling in a black tyre than a “ball of silver”.
“They are just over the pier at the World’s End. The tyres that are visible appear to have angle grinder cuts both sides,” said Mr Sheehan, who has counted over 40 tyres in about five/six foot of water.
There are two on the dam too and three more as you go down to the damn on an embankment, leading him to believe there are more on the river bed.
He thinks the tyres were dumped weeks ago, but due to heavy rain the river has been murky and the tyres may not have been seen easily.
“Visually it is bad, it is beautiful down there. That is where most people would park a car, sit on the wall and admire the view.
“The dumping is beyond comprehension. Castleconnell owes its name to the salmon fisheries and it lives on that name.
“All you need is one of these visiting fishermen to spot the tyres and destroy the good will,” said Mr Sheehan, who has been in contact with Limerick County Council environment department on the matter,
What Mr Sheehan can’t understand is how the tyres were dumped without being noticed as you would need a sizeable vehicle to dump that amount.
“It’s a dead-end so somebody must have seen them as the only large vehicle that would go down that road is the dustbin truck,” said Mr Sheehan.
Limerick County Council spent funds amounting to around €1.7m in 2010 on litter control/street sweeping etc. “In these days of scarce resources, many better uses for this money could be found e.g recreation, libraries, environmental projects etc,” said a spokesperson.
Their tag-line is, “the environment, see something, say something”.
The free phone litter line number is 1800 201151 or email firstname.lastname@example.org if you have any information on the tyre dumping in Castleconnell.
In Gooig bog local groups helped to clean up the rubbish and it was taken away by the council.
Mr Sheehan hopes a similar project happens in World’s End to “end this debacle”.
