New Year's cheer for Thomond RFC who ease past Midleton to regain top spot in AIL Division 2C

Thomond moved back top of Division 2C of the All-Ireland League after scoring a bonus point win over Midleton in their rescheduled fixture on Saturday

THOMOND RFC regained top spot in Division 2C of the energia All-Ireland League after recording an impressive 31-17 bonus point victory over Midleton at Liam Fitzgerald Park on Saturday afternoon.

Thomond's seventh win from the opening half of regular season fixtures has seen the Limerick side move two points clear of second-placed Clonmel in the table.

Winger Sam Birrane scorched over for a hat-trick of tries as Thomond secured a maximum five-point haul against their East Cork opponents.

The sides were tied 17-17 at the end of an entertaining opening half. The home side had trailed 3-14 at one stage, but hit back through two first half tries from Colin Slater and the first of Birrane's three five-pointers. 

Evan Cusack also kicked two conversions and a penalty for the home side.

Thomond added 14 unanswered points to their tally in the second half, while succeeding in keeping Midleton scoreless.

Birrane notched two further tries after the restart, both of which were converted, as Thomond recorded a precious victory.

The win comes a week before Thomond renew rivalry with Limerick rivals Bruff in a crucial AIL derby clash at Liam Fitzgerald Park on Saturday next, 2.30pm.
