LIMERICK’S People’s Park will this evening play host to some free open-air entertainment with a classic screening of the much-loved Marx Brothers film Duck Soup.
Happenings, a group which runs pop up “socially responsible” events in parks and public spaces, are organising the event in association with City of Culture and the Elemental Arts & Culture Festival.
The event takes place from 6.30pm this Friday, with free admission.
There will be food and drink stalls and music performances before the film, with “everything from classical quartet to rock, street entertainers and face painting, plus juggling and puppet-making”, according to Peter O’Brien, founder of Happenings.
“Happenings’ Instant Open-Air Cinema and Music Fest is a chance to enjoy great cultural events in Limerick’s beautiful open spaces when the weather is good,” he explained.
“It’s a fun alternative to the local beer garden or the queues of traffic on the way to the beach.”
Happenings recently ran the Paddy’s Day unlocked event in the Milk Market, an alcohol free feast of creativity, food and dance, curated by local musicians Owen and Moley O’Súilleabháin, to much success, welcoming a crowd of some 5,000 people on the day.
Founded in 2012, Happenings have run similar such events in Dublin, releasing news of each event just 30 hours in advance when good weather arrives. The company aim to run “responsible, sustainable gatherings of people designed to enrich cultural and creative experience in an affordable manner”.
