'Loose waste on floor' - Popular Limerick takeaway forced to close doors last month

The routine inspection found that Captain's Catch in Limerick failed to comply with food legislation
A popular takeaway in Limerick was forced to close its doors last month following an inspection from the HSE amid poor operational hygiene standards.
The closure order was served to Mr Obaidullah Marufkhel, owner and operator of Captain's Catch Ltd, located at Devils Ink 5 Parnell Street Limerick, V94RX47.
The routine inspection found that the premises failed to comply with food legislation for reasons set out below which resulted in all of the business, its establishments, holdings or other premises be closed with immediate effect.
Particular reasons for the closure order include:
· An absence of a basic cleaning programme as evidenced by the build-up of dirt and debris in the hard to reach areas, particularly noted in the rear store.
· Cleaning is hampered by poor storage practices, loose waste on the floor, personal clothing noted on food containers and inadequate storage of dry good and packaging, some of which is noted to be placed on redundant equipment.
· Hard to reach areas of the floor, particularly under the equipment was filthy with food debris.
· The staff were not wearing any personal protective equipment, (PPE)
· There was no hair covering or hats being worn.
· There was no anti-bacterial soap for hand washing.
· There was a large basin of unknown foodstuffs which was unlabelled and uncovered.
· Raw beef burgers were stored above ready to eat foodstuffs including cheese and the turkey bacon
· Potential for cross contamination due to uncovered foodstuffs in storage.
· Food handling staff are not trained in food hygiene matters to a level appropriate to their work activity
· The lack of controls being implemented was, and is likely to be, a significant risk to public health due to the risk of food being contaminated.
The closure order was served on May 13, 2026, and was lifted on May 18, 2026.
