Limerick convenience store closes down

CASTLETROY has lost a key facility after it was confirmed Spar in the University Court had closed.

CASTLETROY has lost a key facility after it was confirmed Spar in the University Court had closed.

But the post office which took in a part of the facility has moved to the nearby Castletroy Shopping Centre.

However, the loss of a key facility in the area is a blow to the area, as Spar was the main facility in a unit which includes the La Cucina Italian restaurant, a pharmacy, a hairdressers and an off-licence.

Local Fine Gael councillor Michael Sheahan said he is “surprised and disappointed” by the news.

“Whenever I am down there, I have tried to get parking and it is difficult because it is busy. I am saddened it has closed down. All I can do is hope that another operator can be found to take over,” he said.

However, he welcomed the fact the post office had moved to a bigger, dedicated facility opposite Superquinn in the Castletroy Shopping Centre.

He said: “The post office was too small for the business which was going on there. It was not big enough for the volume of people moving there.

“Now it is in a fine big space at the Castletroy Shopping Centre. I feel staff prefer working there and everybody is very happy at this. The workspace is nearly three times bigger to the one they had.”

Artist Rob Reid, who lives in the nearby Milford Grange estate said the closure is “a sign of the times”.

“I am disappointed. This will put me out of my way. a bit. I think it is strange – it is sad news. I will have to visit Spar at the Carlton Castletroy Park Hotel now,” he said.

A spokesman for the retailer confirmed the outlet ceased trading last Thursday.

“The company apologises for any inconvenience caused to customers, who will be accommodated at Gleeson’s Spar Castletroy,” the statement read.
