Emergency crews respond to reports of person entering the river Shannon in Limerick

Limerick Fire and Rescue's FireSwift was deployed during the rescue

EMERGENCY crews were dispatched to the river Shannon this Wednesday afternoon having been alerted to reports of a person entering the water near Limerick city centre.

Four units of Limerick Fire and Rescue service were dispatched from Limerick Fire Station, Mulgrave Street and the FireSwift Rescue boat was launched within minutes of the alarm being raised shortly after 4pm.

Gardai also attended the scene and paramedics from the National Ambulance Service were placed on standby.

Volunteer crews from Limerick Marine Search and Rescue also provided assistance as a thorough search of the river Shannon was carried out between Shannon Bridge and Sarsfield Bridge.

However, nothing was found and the search operation was called off shortly before 5pm.
